Charcoal, tar and the smithy
Wood is worth more once you've worked it. Charcoal and tar sell for more than firewood, and a smithy makes your own tools and mends the old ones.
Charcoal
- Hold 8 pieces of firewood, hold Z and pick Charcoal stack. Build it on open ground.
- Click it to cover it with turf and light it. It smoulders for 8 minutes, and you can leave it.
- When it has burned through, click the heap to rake out 4 pieces of charcoal.
The steward buys charcoal at 3 öre a piece. The smiths need it too: a forge burns nothing else.
Tar
Scots pines grow in the drier parts of the forest and along sandy shores. Fell one, then chop out its stump for stumpwood, which is heavy with resin.
- Four fieldstones (4) line a tar pit (hold Z with stones).
- Click it holding stumpwood to pack it in: at least 4 pieces, at most 8.
- Click it with an empty hand to light it. After 6 minutes, click it again: a keg of tar for every 2 pieces, and a piece of charcoal.
The steward pays 8 öre a keg.
The sawhorse
Three planks build a sawhorse. Put a log on the ground beside it, hold a frame saw (20 öre from the steward) and click the sawhorse. The log becomes 3 planks, where splitting with an axe gives 2.
The smithy
Every manor smithy has a forge, an anvil and a grindstone, and anyone may use them. To build your own, use 8 fieldstones for a forge and buy an anvil (40 öre).
- Light the forge: click it holding charcoal. Each piece keeps it hot 4 minutes, up to 40 minutes at once. Wood won't do.
- Hold a smith's hammer (8 öre) and click the anvil. It must stand within 4 tiles of the lit forge. A panel shows what the anvil makes, what each job needs, and what you're missing.
- Have the iron to hand: in your hands, your pouches or on the ground beside you. Bar iron costs 6 öre a bar from the steward, or the anvil welds 3 pieces of scrap into one.
The anvil makes:
- tools: axes, felling axes, knives, crowbars, hammers and frame saws
- 20 nails from a bar
- locks with their keys
- shackles
It also mends a worn tool back to 100%, which the grindstone can't do, and the grindstone will take its edge again afterwards. Every job burns some of the forge's charcoal.
Nails
A door takes 2 nails, a chest 4 and a crate 2, as well as the planks. The steward sells ten nails for 2 öre, or forge 20 from a bar.
All the numbers are on Making, the Anvil and Production chains.
