Spruce | — | A tall Norway spruce, the commonest tree of the Estonian forest. An axe will fell it for logs. Slow going between the trunks. |
Boulder | — | A granite boulder left behind by the glaciers. Something heavy will break it into fieldstones. |
Spruce stump | — | The stump of a felled spruce. Left alone, a seedling comes up beside it; chop it out with an axe to clear the ground. |
Young spruce | — | A young spruce, knee-high. In a while it will be a tree worth felling. |
Pine | — | A Scots pine, tall and straight with a crown of blue-green needles. It grows on dry and sandy ground. Felled, its resinous stump is what tar is burned from. |

Campfire | — | Split firewood burning in a ring of fieldstones. Stand close to get warm; feed it firewood to keep it going. |
Cold ashes | — | A ring of blackened stones round grey ash and bits of charcoal, where a fire burned out. Lay firewood on it to light a new one. |
Stove | — | A big stove of fieldstones and clay. In a barn-dwelling it is the kiln-stove, with no chimney: it heats the room, dries the grain and smokes the rafters black. The household keeps it lit from evening until morning; anyone may feed it firewood. |
Fieldstone stove | 6 fieldstones | A stove of fieldstones and clay, built by hand. Feed it firewood: it heats the room and lights it. |
Charcoal stack | 8 pieces of firewood | Firewood stood on end in a tight dome, ready to be covered with turf and fired. Click it to light it. |
Smouldering charcoal stack | — | A charcoal stack under its turf, smouldering slowly. Opened too soon it would burn away to ash; leave it until the smoke stops. |
Charcoal heap | — | The stack has burned through: a black heap of charcoal under the raked-off turf. Click it to rake the charcoal out. |
Tar pit | 4 fieldstones | A funnel-shaped pit lined with stones. Fill it with pine stumpwood, cover it and fire it, and the tar runs out at the bottom into a keg. |
